Players Begging For a Call-Up: NL Edition

We are into the second month of the baseball season and although most of the samples we have on player performance are small we can look at their career path and realize that some of these players just need more time. For others, though, there time may be running out and here are a few who are in danger of losing their job. And for some in the minors they and their stats are simply begging to get called up. Here are a few who could be getting a call soon.

Trevor Bauer (SP – ARI): Last night was not Bauer’s best night, allowing 5 earned runs in 5.2 innings but he struck out 9 and now has a 2.36 ERA and 46 strikeouts in 34.1 innings. He has walked 20, so he needs to cut down on the walks, but he is not far from contributing at the Big League level. Remember, he is only 21 and already in Double-A.

Adrian Cardenas (3B – CHI): Ian Stewart, now 27, is off to yet another slow start and only hitting .169/.247/.260 after hitting .156/.243/.221 for the Rockies last year despite a minor league track record that would make you scratch your head in wonder. Cardenas collected three more hits last night and now has five multi-hit games in his last eight contests and is hitting .354/.398/.585 with 7 doubles, 3 triples, 2 homeruns, a stolen base, and an 8:4 BB/K rate. Unlike Stewart, Cardenas puts the ball in the play and is a better base runner. The kid is only 24 year old and I doubt he sits in Triple-A much longer.

Anthony Rizzo (1B – CHI): Another Cubs Triple-A bat that is raking. He is currently hitting .374/.424/.637 with 3 doubles and 7 homeruns and the 22 year old owns a career Triple-A line of .340/.408/.649 with 37 doubles and 33 homeruns in 512 plate appearances. The main problem, though, is Bryan LaHair is currently raking in the Majors to the tune of .390/.471/.780 with 8 doubles and 5 homeruns. I would like to see them move the .237/.250/.263 hitting Alfonso Soriano to the bench, or another team willing to take him off their hands, LaHair to left field, and call up Rizzo to play first base. I could see this happening closer to June or July when Rizzo’s Super-Two status will hopefully fall off.

Tim Federowicz (C – LAD): The Dodgers catching situation in the Majors is not bad with A.J. Ellis hitting .305/.446/.475 and throwing out 40% of attempted base stealers but his back up Matt Treanor is off to a horrible start hitting .133/.176/.267 and has yet to throw an attempted base stealer out. Federowicz is hitting .300/.367/.475 with 6 doubles, a triple, and 2 homeruns in Triple-A and owns a career Triple-A line of .313/.401/.552 in a small sample 192 plate appearances. His receiveing skills are still great but he needs to throw more than 26% of attempted base stealers out. He could be up soon if Treanor continues to post negative value for this team winning team.

Robbie Erlin (LHP – SD): There is no rush to bring Erlin up but all he does is produce solid numbers in the minors. Joe Wieland earned a call up and has been much more impressive than his 4.91 ERA shows with 20 strikeouts and only 6 unintentional walks in 22 Big League innings. Clayton Richard is pitching badly with a 5.12 ERA and 17/13 K/BB in 31.2 innings and 5 homeruns allowed. Erlin is still very young at 21 years old but Double-A has been a breeze for him with a 2.66 ERA and 30 strikeouts against just 4 unintentional walks in 23.2 innings and only one homerun allowed. He now owns a career Double-A ERA of 3.33 with 122 strikeouts and only 15 unintentional walks in 116.1 innings. I doubt he gets the call up anytime soon but his numbers beg for one.

Chris Hatcher (RHP – MIA): This is only Hatcher’s second full season behind the mound but the transition has been a successful one. He has a 16/3 K/BB in 14.2 Triple-A innings over 10 games and only one run allowed for a 0.61 ERA. His career behind the mound has resulted in a 1.56 ERA and a 74/33 K/BB in 63.1 relief innings all in Double-A and Triple-A. He is ready to help the Miami bullpen right now and is begging to get called up.
